~Opalescence~

Kaylara was exploring behind her house, up in the jungle. The day was beautiful and sunny, with a crystal blue sky overhead, and golden sun behind her, warming her back as she walked. The rainforest was warm around her, birds twittered, and somewhere far away, a panther growled. Everything was peaceful and content to go about life. All but Kaylara. She was angry. She stomped up the faint dirt path, frowning at the trees, and rocks that got in her way.
She stomped all the way to the top of Treasure Hill. The hill - not really a hill, more like a big lump of poking out rocks - was called so because it was made of heavily metamorphosed conglomerate, and contained many gems and precious minerals... if they could be found beneath the covering of growth, plants and vines that had covered rocks after the surrounding area had been eroded. The craggy rocks were now covered in vegetation, leafy greens and purples and oranges. The top of the canopy reached just above ground level on the top of the hill, and there were holes and small caves hidden in the vegetation.

Kaylara was wearing her rainbow summer dress, very inappropriate for jungle traversing, but she didn't care. She hadn't intended to come here today. She loved rainbow clothes, and either wore her summer dress, or if she was going exploring, a colourful singlet, and jeans. She had golden brown hair, and sky blue eyes. She was very pretty, although she didn't realise, as the boys always hassled her about everything.

She stomped to the top of Treasure Hill, and sat down on her favourite rock, the highest one there, and it had a cozy cave beneath it. She could see into the distance anyway she looked, the different coloured tropical trees making a rainbow carpet before her.
She sat on the rock and swung her feet and growled. The kids back home were mean. They had teased her about being a girl, and trying out for the dragon clutch. It wasn't often that commoners were asked to care for dragon eggs, and she wanted one. So, without thinking she had announced that she would try for one. They had laughed at her, and said a young girl wouldn't get an egg. They had teased her while they were waiting to talk to a representitive, so much that she couldn't stay. She had told them to leave her alone, and run as fast as she could. The rainforest had been her destination even though she hadnt realised it. It was her favourite place. The rocky vegetation provided many places to explore, hid in and play around. It was a beautifully colourful rainforest, not only did it have the lush green plants, but different pigments in certain plants had created a myriad of colours - deep purple, ruby red, blue, gold, even pale creamy white - and the flowers were just as colourful - and they glinted in the sunlight like jewels. It was beautiful by any season, in summer it was a blur of colour, winter was crystal faceted, and spring everything glittered from dew-drops.

Kaylara fumed for a while in the summer sun, screwing up her face and yelling at a flock of brilliant blue parrots that fluttered past, but eventually she calmed down. She realised she wouldn't let the boys get the better of her, she deserved a dragon so much more than them. She hopped off the rock, and examined the top of the 'hill' for a while. Finally she decided that this would do perfectly. She had read up on the DragonRose Adoptions a few weeks before, when she had found their library held information. There had been 8 main types of dragons in the beginning, Earth, Air, Fire, Rainbow Butterfly, Day, Night, Silver Filament, and Water. Many bonds had been formed, and many clutches had been born since then. New types were occurring as different parents mated. Some were rather interesting colours and shapes. At the time, Kaylara hadn't been able to decide which type she liked best. She still didn't. But then the people had come, saying there were eggs that needed good homes. They needed people who were trustworthy and willing to give a dragon a good home. She had to try.

Kaylara moved around Treasure Hill, collecting soft vines and mosses, which she brought to the top, to her cave, which she named Rainbow Cave, as the light reflected in it colourfully. She swept out all the dust, and then made a comfy nest near the back of the cave, padded with the mosses, by the wall. She chased all the bigger bugs and insects out of the cave, including a few lizards. She collected flowers and scattered them around, then wondered if that was too much. She laughed at herself, then scampered out of the cave, and all the way back to her village. She made her way quietly, keeping out of everyones way, to the building where she knew the people had been. She knocked and entered. There were two people, and they were just packing up the last of their papers. She frowned, she hoped she wasn't too late. "Oh, I was hoping..." She trailed off, disappointed, and went to turn around.
"No wait. It's ok. Are you here about the dragons?" The man motioned her to come and sit. He sat back down too.
Kaylara swallowed, suddenly nervous, then sat quietly. "Yea.. I mean, yes. I would really really like to have a dragon. I know all about the different breeds and stuff... I even have a home.." She rushed on. "Its in the jungle, theres a rock hill thing, and a cave for shelter at night, I made a nest out of mosses.." The man held up his hand for her to stop, laughing.
"It's ok, we're not going to bite. It sounds like you're really interested. And like you'll actually help look after one.. not like some of the others we saw in here today..." He trailed off for a moment, then continued, briskly. "Fill in this," He gave Kaylara a piece of paper and a pen, "It's an application. Just your details and stuff." He waited while she filled it in, chewing on her lip. She finished and handed it to him. He glanced at it quickly, then smiled at her, and handed another sheet over. "This is a list of the eggs that are currently waiting for homes. The details of the parents, and the genetics of them are beside each one. All you have to do is make a first and second choice on which you think would like to live in your home. Then write it down on your application. Thats it!" He smiled again, and Kaylara looked at the list. It was quite long. She saw one that caught her eye.

Parents
Roah'lynd - Rainbow Butterfly
Alloy - SilverFilament

Crystal Treasures - 4 eggs avaliable

She stared at the pictures of the eggs. They were beautiful. She knew this was the type she wanted. And a Rainbow Butterly nad Silver Filament parents.. The dragon should be happy in her home. She grinned as she carefully wrote the parents, egg name and number on her application, then handed it to the man.
"You can choose a second one, in case you don't get the first," He said, guesturing to the page.
She shook her head. "Thats ok, thats the dragon I want."
He shrugged. "Ok then. Well, someone will be back in a week or two to let you know whats happening. See ya then." He shook her hand, and the people left. Kaylara sat down to contemplate. She tried to think of a name. Crystals.. light, treasure, sparkles.. Maybe Opalescence? maybe. interesting. Yes. That would do. She didn't want to wait too long...

She didn't have to wait long, a representative was back the next day, and bundled a beautiful rainbow coloured egg into her arms. "Keep it in a warm place, surrounded by warm sands or something similar, and turn it every few hours. It will hatch in the least a week. Could be a lot longer though, you shall just have to have patience."
Kaylara sat abruptly on a chair as the man left. The egg was warm in her arms, and kind of soft, but firm. And warm. She was surprised at the warmth. Heeding the mans words, she made her way up to Treasure Hill, and placed the egg in the nest. She hunted around the top rocks, and found the perfect place for the egg. Sheltered, but sandy, a small hollow carved out by wind and rain. Now it comfortably warm, the sun heating the sands. She brought the egg and placed it in the hole she had made, and half covered it. She was bouncing in her excitement, unable to sit still, so she spent the afternoon in the sun, weaving a basket and shelter for the colourful egg.
